Youth Sailing School and Learn-to-Race
Our Youth Sailing Program is a sailing school for children from age 8 to 17. This program, which is in a day camp format, provides sail training for the beginner through to intermediate sailors using Sail Canada’s “Learn to Sail” standards which focus on demonstrated skills and on-the-water training.
Youth Sailing has three key learning programs:
1) "I CANSail": This program is a one-week session designed to introduce younger, first-time sailors to the fun of sailing. The target age group is 8 – 11 years old. The primary objectives of this program are to learn water safety and to let children experience how fun and rewarding learning how to sail can be! If your child loves sailing after completing "I CANSail", they can be registered for either one or two-week Sailing School sessions. The sessions run Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and include statutory holidays.
2) Sailing School: Our core Sailing School Program is comprised of four, two-week sessions in July and August. The participants work at their own speed to achieve nationally recognized sailing competency levels. The sessions run Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and include statutory holidays. At the end of the two weeks, parents and guardians are invited to watch their children on the water and enjoy a lunch BBQ. The two-week sessions for 2020 run as follows:
- June 29 - July 10
- July 13 - July 24
- July 27 - August 7
- August 10 - August 21
Note: Once a new student has registered and completed “iCANSail” or the first week of a two-week Sailing School session, they can be registered for either one or two-week Sailing School sessions for the rest of the season. All returning Sailing School students from previous years may register for either one or two-week sessions.
3) Learn-to-Race: This program is held during the first session of the Sailing School and is dedicated to coaching sailors who have progressed to CanSail Level 2 sailing skills and are interested in trying a competitive format. The program is specifically designed to provide junior sailors with the skills required to make it around the course at their first regatta. This Program will focus on single-handed racing skills. In the final two days of the program, the sailors complete in the annual learning regatta – called the Steerers Regatta - at the Port Credit Yacht Club.
Note: To accommodate parents' work schedules, supervision is available from 8:00 am (pre-class) for early drop-offs, and from 4:00 to 5:00 pm (post-class). You must make prior arrangements for this extra cost item at the time of registration.
