Youth Race Team Program
The Learn-to-Race program is a great condensed introductory course. For those sailors who catch the “racing bug”, our coaches will be happy to continue the training throughout the season for sailors wishing to join the Youth Race Team.
This racing development program is recommended for sailors with CANSail 2 certification or equivalent sailing experience and for those who can confidently handle a boat. It is an integrated training and racing program for youth providing advanced level racing training and racing opportunities to further the development of basic sailing skills and racing tactics, knowledge and experiences. These skills include: Starting techniques, Upwind sailing, Downwind sailing and Navigating windward and leeward marks, racing rules and boat handling. The program focuses on racing single-handed boats.
The Youth Race Team trains on Mondays and Thursday from 4:30 – 7:00 pm from the beginning of July to the end of August.
The Youth Race Team Program ensures the development of sailors with knowledge of sailing skills for competitive representation of BQYC by identifying individual skill levels and developing customized programs. The fleet for the Youth Race Team includes the Opti, Laser and Club 420. Youth weighing less than 130 lbs race Optimist Sailboats and those weighing greater than 130lbs race Laser sailboats. The Lasers are rigged with either a Radial rig or 4.7 rig dependent on weight and skill factors. The Laser and OPTI fleets enable youth to sail and race against other club members in a strong and vibrant club racing fleet, and to race competitively outside the club.
While the Youth Race Team is focused on competition, it is not a strict requirement to attend “Out of Town Regattas”. This is however encouraged. It will be the intention of the team, at the discretion of the coaches and team manager, to attend as many out of town regattas as possible. In 2018, the Optimist racers attended the Steerers regatta in Port Credit, the Four Sisters regatta in Port Credit, and the CORK regattas in Kingston.
Fees for “Out of Town “ regatta registrations, regatta coaching and accommodations at regattas are not included in the program fees. BQYC will transport charter boats to regattas attended by BQYC racers with coach accompaniment. Parent volunteers for regattas and chaperoning is expected and appreciated.
Don’t have your own boat? While some racers have their own boats, charter boats are available on a first come, first serve basis. Please CLICK hereto see / print a copy of the Charter Boat Agreement.

Quinte Quest Clinic and Regatta:
Part of youth racing is competition in organized regattas. The Bay of Quinte Yacht Club hosts the Quinte Quest Clinic and Regatta each year to provide a great opportunity for our Youth Race Team to compete against each other and participants from other clubs.
